The Sarania Kachari Tribe of Assam :Assam is the land of diverse ethnicity, starting from Mongoloid, Tibeto-burmese, Aryan, Dravidian all the diverse ethnic groups have been melted in a special pot named Assam. As far as the recognised history confirms, the early settlers in these areas descends from Tibeto-Burmese origins. They were known as Bodo-Kachari at that time.
From the historical point of view, Sarania Kachari were Kirats or Bodo-Kachari in origin. Sarania Kachari belonged to Mongoloid racial stock like other tribal communities living in Assam.
Based on an 1881 census, there were 19 groups within the Kachari classification: Boro, Dimasa, Dhimal, Garo, Hajong, Hojai(Dimasa), Lalung (Tiwa), Madahi, Mahalia, Mech, Matak, Moran, Phulgaria, Rabha, Sonowal, Sutiya, Saraniya (Sarania), Solaimiya, Tipra[Jamatia, Bru (Reangs), Mogs, Uchai, Noatia, Debbarma(Tiprasa)]
Some of the Kachari groups, such as Sutiya, Matak, Moran and Saraniya (Sarania) consider themselves as lower-caste Hindus. Other groups, such as the Garo, Rabha, Lalung and Hajong having been isolated from the parental stock, have established separate identities.
Typical surname used by Sarania Kachari tribes are Sarania, Kachari, Das, Baruah, Kakati, Deka, Choudhury, Mahalia, Saikia, Barman, Mazumdar, Hazarika etc. (This surname are also used by General Caste, Ahom, Sutiya, Kachari, Sonowal, Kalita etc. Community)
Sarania Kachari Culture : Rice is a staple of the Sarania Kachari. Traditionally Sarania Kachari are non-vegetarians.
Weaving and cultivation are integral part of Sarania Kachari culture. Many Sarania Kachari families rear their own silkworms, the cocoons of which are then spun into silk. Sarania Kachari girls learn to weave from a young age. Most Sarania Kachari women weave their own “Mekhela Sadar” (the traditional dress of the Sarania Kachari women) and “Gamocha” (Muksha) for Sarania Kachari men. The Sarania Kachari are also expert craftsmen in bamboo.
The “Bah Gossain Puja” (Bamboo God) is the most important festival of Sarania Kachari. Other impotant festival of Sarania Kachari are Bihu (Bohag Bihu, Kati Bihu and Magh Bihu), Bambolpita or Heporpita Utsav, Mah-kheda Utsav etc.
